I had a dream the other day that I was writing a blog about peeling a mango and savoring every bite of it. Sounds crazy but I do have off-the-wall dreams sometimes.

Of course I realize that Mangos are not everyone’s cup of tea. The fruit and its texture does require an acquired taste, but even if you don’t like mangos, keep reading, this can definitely be profitable to you.

My family and I love mangos. I grew up with a mango tree in our back yard so whenever I can get a hold of a good one it’s heavenly chow time! My mango eating secrets can be relatable to living to the fullest.

First, slice both fat meaty sides (not too close to the hard seed) and then slash the meat into six sections. One slice north and south and two slices east to west.

Then, with clean hands and using both thumbs as a spoon, hold the slice with both hands and scoop up each to the six chunks of meat out of there. This reminds me that life is to be lived by the chunk.

Here’s the idea, try not to lag behind the excitement of what today brings. Neither get too far ahead of yourself by thinking of tomorrow. Today has certain gusto you don’t want to miss. You may say, “But I work everyday. What’s the joy in that?” Find something in your office (maybe the view through the window) or in your cubby (maybe a memory of a picture you have) that brings you a sense of peace and hope. It may be the sweet taste of the ice coffee in your Arctic Cup or the company of whomever you are with outside that helps you feel good… whatever it is, focus on that.

Moses wrote something  incredibly insightful,

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12, NIV)

Interesting that he didn’t use the word years but days (hours, minutes, seconds). Today is what matters! Balance what’s negative about it with what’s positive. The shame of it all is that we so often dwell on regrets and what’s bad rather than what’s good. Life is too brief to waste! Right now, be wise, and count your blessings!

Now back to this mango madness; after you’re done devouring that juicy meat, carefully slice the edges off and eat the goodness found there.

Don’t waste anything! Life is worth living and living it to the max!!

When my brother Hector bought a boat he told me he got it so he could enjoy life while he was healthy and able. His wife called that thing a money pit but, man, we built so many fun memories on that vessel. I’m definitely not encouraging you to go buy a boat or an airplane but to enjoy every bit of life that you can.

I have a very successful friend who told me he was selling his business here in the states and moving to Thailand. “Thailand?” I asked. “Thailand!” He repeated. “It’s cheap, beautiful, and my girlfriend lives there.” What a crazy idea, I thought. He instant message me this morning…he is having the time of his life and he feels so much at peace!

Talk about not wasting a moment, a day, a lifetime. What is not wasting a life to you? For me it has nothing to do with moving to Thailand but everything to do with looking forward to what’s next with my wife and God’s purpose for me.

One more quick mango idea. At this point the seed should be free of skin.

Sometimes when I’m alone I’ll start biting every bit of fruit left and ultimately stuff the whole thing in my mouth sucking all its juice. By the time I’m done I’ve got mango all over my face… don’t judge me!

I see that as relishing the moments you have… especially those with those you love. Maybe it’s why I like Aerosmith’s song I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing so much. Anyways… live life mango style, even if you’re not from the tropical Caribbean, you’ll love it.

What’s your thought? Please leave me a comment!

  1. Jorge, I really look forward to reading your blog every week! It’s always so refreshing and insightful, full of humor and wisdom at the same time! I’m not a big mango fan, but I get your point…..savor every juicy moment of your life, and cherish every memory. Learn from your experiences and mistakes, bettering yourself as you go. And always…ALWAYS…trust in God and let Him lead you on your path!
